Victorian streets, a cable car and the Amber Coast
Puerto Plata is the north coast of the Dominican Republic in one province: a colonial port city with the largest collection of Victorian architecture in the Caribbean, a cable car climbing 800 metres to the statue on Mount Isabel de Torres, and a shoreline that runs from the resorts of Playa Dorada and Cofresí to the kite beaches of Cabarete. Gregorio Luperón International (POP) puts you in the middle of it, and we take you the rest of the way in a private vehicle.
Green mountains that fall straight into the Atlantic, real towns instead of resort compounds, and a coastline built for surfing, kitesurfing and whale season. Puerto Plata city itself has a restored Victorian centre, the San Felipe fortress on the sea wall, the amber museum that gave the coast its name, and a cable car — the only one in the Caribbean — with views over the whole bay.
Gregorio Luperón International (POP) is the main gateway, 14-18 km from the resort zones and the city, meaning a 20 to 35 minute transfer. Some travellers arrive at Santiago (STI), 75 km and about 1.5 hours away, or at Las Américas (SDQ), a 3.5 to 4.5 hour drive across the country. We operate all three routes as direct private transfers with fixed prices.
Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada, Cofresí, Maimón, the Puerto Plata Malecón and historic centre, Sosúa, Cabarete and Río San Juan, plus private villas in the hills and the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay cruise terminals. If you are staying in Cabarete for a kite course, we carry boards and equipment at no extra charge.
Because the north coast is spread out. A group bus from POP can visit half a dozen hotels between Cofresí and Cabarete before it reaches yours, turning a 25 minute ride into two hours. Our vehicle goes to one address: yours, at a price fixed before you travel, with flight tracking and a driver waiting in the arrivals hall.
The 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua, where you jump and slide down natural limestone pools; the Mount Isabel de Torres cable car; the beaches and reef of Sosúa; the sandbar of Cayo Arena off Punta Rucia; and, from January to March, humpback whales in the bay of Samaná. Our north coast excursions include private pickup from any hotel between Cofresí and Cabarete.
